Far From Help

Saturday 6 - Sunday 7 March 2010. "Great - well presented, interesting and understandable." Callum Taylor (FFH, RGS-IBG '08)
Organised in association with Wilderness Medical Training (WMT), this two-day course starts where conventional first aid stops. It is designed for small expedition groups (private and commercial), solo travellers, media personnel, climbers, trek leaders / teachers, yachtsmen, overland drivers, researchers and academics, military personnel and anyone operating in remote areas where medical help is not readily available.
The course aims to develop judgment and ability to discriminate between conditions that can be managed and resolved in the field, those that should be monitored closely and those that require evacuation. If you have the knowledge to confidently rule out a serious problem you might be able to salvage your expedition or travels without resorting to an unnecessary evacuation. However, even if you decide to evacuate, FFH will teach you many useful things you can do before reaching professional medical help which might ease the pain and suffering of your team member or reduce their risk of severe or permanent disability.
For full details and to book the WMT course, download the booking form (PDF)
View 2010 course programme here (PDF)
Details of the 2010 course trainers can be viewed here (PDF)

Empire Medical Training provides programs for physicians of multiple specialties that are interested in learning the latest treatments for pain management utilizing injection techniques. With medical technology consistently improving there are more options for patients that suffer from pain related issues and many of these can be treated with Fluoroscopically Guided Injection techniques.

The Pain Management and Advanced Pain Management programs are scheduled on consecutive days for the convenience of the attending physicians as well as maximize the training experience. Low back pain is one of the most common afflictions in society today. Almost every person will have at least one episode of low back pain at some time in his or her lifetime resulting in more patients looking for the most innovative and modern procedure for the correctional cure.

Empire Medical Training has provided this training for the past 11 years and is one of the most recognized training programs for learning injection procedures. Empire’s instructors are top pain management physicians with extensive, day to day experience in Pain Management Injections. Advanced, Preceptorship training with an instructor can also be arranged after completing the initial workshop.

This training program is designed to improve knowledge and skill levels in image guidance (either Fluoroscopic or Ultrasonic) that are typically an integral part of performing spinal injections. In addition to the precision added when using Image Guidance, there is an increase in reimbursement as well. Pain management continues to rank among the highest paying sub specialty services. The usual physician attendees are specialists in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, General Surgery and other Primary Care Physicians.

The Advanced Pain Management program is intended for all specialists and Primary Care Physicians. This program teaches attendees to perform various interventional procedures under fluoroscopic guidance. The attendees for this course should have completed an introductory program or already have experience with interventional procedures. The advanced program covers select procedures performed in the office setting using a C Arm for Fluoroscopic needle localization.

All of the pain management programs will be instructed by physician specialists in pain management through Hands-On training and each attendee will perform the various injections using Fluoroscopic and Ultrasound techniques. A program that may be beneficial to physicians participating in the pain management procedures program is the Physical Therapy workshop for physicians that are interested in incorporating Physical Therapy Services into a primary care office.

Empire Medical Training is an American based training institution that has remained the #1 training and certification source worldwide with Surgical Workshops, Aesthetic Workshops, Pain Management Procedures, Liposuction, Mesotherapy Training, Cellulite, and Lipo Therapies with the continuing goal to help students and physicians succeed in Aesthetic Medicine. The newest concept in aesthetic training is Empire’s newest addition of Private Aesthetic Training performed for the physician in their own office.

Hospital Care - Pulse!!

Hospital Care - Pulse!!

Pulse!! is a virtual, clinical-training tool for medical and nursing students that borrows design and game-play elements from first-person shooter video games. The $4.3 million, federally funded medical-training project is a PC-based learning platform. Pulse!! is funded by the Office of Naval Research, and is designed by BreakAway, currently working on a proof-of-concept prototype that will be completed by the end of 2006. Eventually, it will be marketed to educational institutions as a PC-based training tool.
They began with a photorealistic model of the Bethesda Naval Hospital's Intensive Care Unit, which will serve as the virtual setting for the training tool. Students navigate through Pulse!! as if playing a first-person shooter, taking on the role of a health-care provider rather than looking onto a scene omnisciently. They talk and interact with a patient to discover what ails him.In the first virtual clinical case, a young soldier who has returned to the United States from Iraq is suffering from internal injuries sustained in an explosion. In future versions, players will encounter patients with detailed, biologically correct injuries that will, if all goes as planned, take blood spurts and severed limbs to new levels of realism.

Medical Training Review Panel: Tenth Report

The tenth annual report of the Medical Training Review Panel (MTRP).
The report describes the activities of the Panel and provides valuable data on medical training opportunities in Australia, including the number of prevocational training positions in 2006, the number of vocational medical training places available in 2006, the number of first year placements likely to be available in 2007, the number of new college fellows in 2005, and the results of college examinations held in 2005.

For the first time, this year's annual report also contains data on the numbers of medical students undertaking university studies and the number of applications received for positions in advanced training courses.

Medical Coding Schools: Medical Coding Training, Online Medical Coding Courses

Medical coding is a process by which medical diagnoses and procedures are changed into universal medical codes. The federal government’s new legislation mandates that all healthcare industries adhere to a standardized medical coding system. Having accurately coded medical data facilitates the electronic storage of patient records, reimbursement of medical insurance claims, assessment of healthcare standards, administrative and research activities.

Job Description and Responsibilities of Medical Coding School Graduates

The Province has doubled the number of first-year student doctors trained in B.C. to address current and future shortages, particularly in rural and remote areas. In just four years, the number of first-year spaces for medical students has increased to 256, compared with 128 in 2003-04.
To achieve this goal, the B.C. government expanded the University of British Columbia’s medical school program to other regions. Thanks to this investment in British Columbia’s future, medical students can now study in Prince George at the University of Northern B.C. and on Vancouver Island at the University of Victoria. On September 23, 2008, construction also began on the home of UBC’s Southern Medical Program, which will train doctors on its Okanagan campus for the first time in B.C. history.
Government decided to educate doctors in the North, the interior and on Vancouver Island to help recruit and retain qualified medical professionals in rural and remote communities. Between 1980 and 2000, the Province’s population grew by 50 per cent, but the number of medical school spaces in B.C. did not increase. As a result, access to care declined in rural regions, particularly in the North.
Expanding medical programs in more regions helps underserved areas attract their share of B.C.’s new doctors, as MDs often set up practice where they have trained.
The UVic and UNBC programs are linked to UBC by state-of-the-art videoconferencing, a distributed learning approach to medical education that is unique in North America. The Province invested $167.7 million in buildings to accommodate the new spaces and the technology to support this distributed learning. This investment includes $110 million for the new Life Sciences Centre at UBC’s Vancouver campus, a further $33.7 million for the new Health Sciences Centre at UBC’s Okanagan campus, and about $12 million each for the Northern Health Sciences Centre at UNBC and the Medical Sciences Building at UVic.
